【摘要】:Thistestmethodisintendedtoevaluatewhethersufficientsalt(NaCl)hasbeenretainedbythehidesorskinstoslowdowndegradationbybacterial(enzymatic)action,andtoslowdownautolysisbyinherentenzymaticaction,untiltheyarepreservedbyatanningprocess.Note28212;Osmosisoccursduringbrinecuringbecausemoistureisdrawnoutbysaltthroughtheepidermis.Lowmoisture(x003C;40%)inthehidesdoesnotnecessarilyindicatepoorcure.Ahidemayhavelowmoistureduetoosmosis;toincreasedfatcontent;ortodryingoutconditions.Inallinstancesthehideswouldstillshowadequatecureifthemoisturewassaturatedtoapproximately85%salt,becausetheash:moistureratiowouldbeadequate.1.1Thistestmethodcoverstheestimationofdegreeofsaturationofthebrinecontentofcured(salt-preserved)hidesandskinscontaining40%ormoremoisture.1.2Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.1.3Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
